Eye-safety analysis of current laser-based scanned-beam projection systems

چکیده
Edward Buckley (SID Member) Abstract — Scanned-beam projection systems have attracted much interest recently, with claimed advantages including power efficiency and potential miniaturization consistent with embedding in mobile devices. However, the laser-safety classification and concomitant performance implications, which are arguably the most important issues pertaining to this technology, remain widely misunderstood. In this paper, Class 1 and 2 laser-safety radiometric image power limits for scanned-beam systems are derived with reference to the IEC 60825-1 standard. By calculating the equivalent photometric measure of luminous flux, it is possible to show that the brightness limits for scannedbeam projection systems using current technology are approximately 1 and 17 lm for Class 1 and 2 safety classifications, respectively.

متن کاملEfficient vector-oriented graphic drawing method for laser-scanned display
Laser projection, such as that used in laser light shows, usually uses computer-drawn graphics. However, some restrictions are imposed by laser-scanned displays on these vector-based drawings. This paper presents a general vector-oriented drawing method to display computer vector graphics on different laser-scanned displays with optimization. The method considers how to solve the three fundamen...
متن کاملTarget-in-the-loop Wavefront Sensing and Control with Collett-Wolf Beacon
It is well known that atmospheric turbulence can severely degrade performance of various optical systems including the laser beam projection systems discussed here. These systems are designed to create and maintain a laser spot of the smallest possible size on a remotely located object in the atmosphere. Compensation (mitigation) of turbulence effects in the laser beam projection systems is typ...
متن کاملLaser Beam Hazard for flight personnel
Lasers can produce a beam of light of such intensity that permanent damage to human tissue, in particular the retina of the eye, can be caused instantaneously, even at distances of over 10 km. At lower intensities, laser beams can seriously affect visual performance without causing physical damage to the eyes; causing transient damage or causing sensation and loss of focus. Laser illumination o...
